Cinnamon Rolls and Final Farewells

What does a funeral and a sticky breakfast treat have in common? Turns out they can work together to restore your focus.

Two things happened this week that reminded me why I love what I do. Over the weekend a friend passed away after a protracted battle with cancer. Tex had been a customer of Bill's Auto for as long as I'd been an employee, he'd been Bill Sr.'s neighbor for decades, and become a real friend to me. My in-laws and I had developed a tradition of spending Thanksgiving morning deer hunting in the beautiful rugged timber and ravines of Tex's farm. I've tried his homemade pastries and marveled at his handmade furniture. I watched him care for his wife as Alzheimer's slowly stole his life-long travel partner. Josh and I helped him move out of his home into assisted living when the upkeep of his home and health became too much for him to handle on his own. He was a good man that will be sorely missed. My condolences go out to his family.

On Monday morning, out of the blue, a wonderful customer brought in a pan of fresh homemade cinnamon rolls, and then walked out. I haven't done any significant work recently for Lisa or her family to deserve such a "sweet" gesture, but I was very grateful and they were delicious! A hot cup of coffee and one (or two, or three) of those rolls out of the microwave made for a fantastic start this morning!

Both events were a reminder of the blessing that comes from a job that allows customers to become friends. In the long hours and "busy-ness" of the day I sometimes forget why I wanted to transition from technician to owner: customer interaction. I've heard many people say "Business would be easy if it wasn't for the people." I beg to differ, I think it's the best part. As we celebrate Thanksgiving I am so thankful for the opportunity I've been given to develop relationships with so many wonderful people and I hope it continues for many years.
